What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin (often referred to as 'Botox' for short) is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This highly purified protein can be used as a cosmetic treatment for reducing wrinkles on the face or profuse sweating from the armpits, palms and soles of feet (hyperhidrosis). In the United Kingdom there are currently two commercially available forms of Botulinum toxin: Botox? and Dysport?. Botox? is generally more widely used and, although it is licensed in the United States, Canada, Switzerland and France for cosmetic use, neither product is licensed for this application in the United Kingdom. This doesn't mean it is illegal to use it but it does mean you must fully understand what the treatment entails and the benefits, potential complications and limitations of the procedure.
